No time for a longer post today. But in the meantime I leave you with this picture I took at the Florida Museum of Natural History. It shows three dugongid sirenians from the late Oligocene (~26 million years ago) of Florida. These three critters were sympatric (meaning that they lived at the same time/place), which is in stark contrast to what sirenians do today. So what was going on back then?
